BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five year undergraduate dentistry course that is fused with theoretical and practical modules and under the norms and standards set by Dental Council of India, prepares the students as a dental practitioner. As per the curriculum norms specified by DCI for BDS course in India, the institute has adopted various theoretical and practical subjects divided in pre-clinical and clinical categories such as General Human Anatomy Including Embryology and Histology, General Human Physiology & Biochemistry, Dental Materials, Human Oral Anatomy including Embryology and Histology, Pre Clinical Conservative Dentistry, Pre Clinical Prosthodontics, General and Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics, General Pathology and Microbiology, Human Oral Anatomy including Embryology and Histology and Physiology, Pre Clinical Conservative, Pre Clinical Prosthodontics, General Medicine, General Surgery, Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Conservative Dentistry including Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Local Anesthesia and General Anesthesia, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Community Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge. Curriculum
First Year Subjects
1. General Anatomy including Embryology, Osteology and Histology
To develop the student’s knowledge into the functional anatomy of the normal human head and neck, including the bony structures, and other soft tissue structures including the muscles, glands, blood vessels, nerves etc.
2. General Human Physiology & Biochemistry
This subject aims to provide the dental student a comprehensive knowledge of the normal physiological and biochemical functions of different organ systems, tissues and cells of the body. This will help to formulate an understanding to the physiological and biochemical basis of health.
3. General Human Physiology & Biochemistry

4. Dental Anatomy, Embryology & Oral Histology
This subject will impart the knowledge and skills regarding the normal development, morphology, structure & functions of oral tissues & variations in different pathological/non-pathological states. The student will also be able to understand the histological basis of various dental procedures along with physiologic basis and features of ageing process evident in the dental tissues.
Second Year Subjects
1. General Pathology & Microbiology
The understanding and thorough knowledge of this subject is utmost important as with this the student will be able to understand the pathological and microbial basis of disease processes. This will result in morphological and functional alterations in cells, tissues and organs.
2. General & Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics
The study of this subject in dentistry helps to understand rational and scientific basis of drugs and therapeutics pertinent with dentistry as well as other diseases and conditions which may have dental implications and interactions. The student will be able to understand the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of essential and commonly used drugs in general and in dentistry in particular.
3. Dental Materials
This science makes the student aware of different type of dental materials used in the treatment along with continued research has led to new material systems. The vast knowledge will help the student to practice dentistry with utmost skills.
4. Pre-clinical Conservative
This subject will aid the dental undergraduate student to understand the basic principles of tooth preparation for restoring teeth using different restorative materials. It also helps to acquire knowledge of different instruments to be used for tooth preparation in terms of their identification, method of grasping and usage.
5. Pre-clinical Prosthodontics
This subject will aid the dental undergraduate student to understand the basic principles of prosthetic and rehabilitation for partially and completely edentulous patients. It also helps to acquire knowledge of different instruments and different materials to be used for the same.
Third Year Subjects
1. General Medicine
General medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. In dentistry it will help the students diagnose oral health implications in dental patients and vice versa.
2. General Surgery
The knowledge of this subject will help the undergraduate students to understand the basic principles of surgery, healing and other surgical guidelines.
3. Oral Pathology & Oral Microbiology
Oral pathology is that part of pathology and a branch of dentistry concerned with the scientific study of the causes and effects of oral disease an understanding of which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rational treatment and preventive programmes.
Fourth Year Subjects
1. Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge
It is a branch of Dentistry pertaining to the restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance & health of the patient. This can be done with the help of restoration of natural Teeth and or replacement of missing teeth & craniofacial tissue with artificial substitutes.
2. Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics
Conservative Dentistry is the branch of dentistry which is concerned with the conservation of teeth in the mouth. It embraces the practice of operative dentistry and endodontics, and includes various kinds of direct and indirect restorations of individual teeth in the mouth.
3. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch that deals with the art of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, pathologies and defects involving the maxillofacial region. This specialty has evolved through the ages and presently the oral & maxillofacial surgeon deals with the various craniofacial pathologies in a multi disciplinary environment.
4. Paediatric & Preventive Dentistry
This is the branch of dentistry which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of infants and kids upto 16 years of age. This includes the preventive, prophylactic, restorative, rehabilitative and counselling treatment modalities.
5. Oral Medicine & Radiology
Oral medicine is that area of special competence concerned with the oral health of the patient for maintenance of overall health of an individual. It includes those principles of medicine that relate to the mouth, as well as research in biological, pathological and clinical spheres. Oral Medicine includes the diagnosis and medical management of diseases specific to the orofacial tissues and of oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It further includes the management of behavioral disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients.
6. Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics
Orthodontics is the branch of Science and the art of dentistry which deals with the development and positional anomalies of the teeth and the jaws as they affect oral health and the physical, esthetic and mental well being of the person. It is a special branch of dentistry which deals with the alignment of the teeth.
7. Periodontology
Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes, such as dental implants.
8. Public Health Dentistry
It is a branch of Dentistry which deals with preventing disease, prolonging life & promoting physical & mental efficiency through organized community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control of communicable infections and imparting education to the society for personal hygiene.
Fifth Year
One Year Paid Compulsory Rotatory Internship
The students will be posted in all the 9 dental specialized departments and will be exposed to all the treatment protocols.

Desh Bhagat Dental College has been equipped with best in class teaching aids, dental laboratories and dental OPD to enrich the students with adequate real-life clinical experiences. The institute consists of Pre - clinical dental laboratories, simulation clinic, clinical support laboratory, bio-dental science learning suite, sterilization rooms, dental x-ray machines, O.P.G. X-ray machines, R.V.G. X-ray machine, automatic radiographic processors, Digital Dental Radiography, Automatic processors, Radiography printer, Radiographic Duplicator and Soft Laser. Apart from these, the department has also been provided with a digital library equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, Conference & Seminar Halls, Clinical Treatment Areas, Oral and Craniofacial Care Center and so on.
